Live grid + map data

Most of an appliance's carbon is spent before you plug it in.

Mendwell weighs manufacturing carbon against real electricity emissions on your grid right now — then finds mapped repair businesses near you. Enter your full address for the most accurate distances.

Run the numbers on your thing

Both options are compared over the same horizon: repair plus the old unit's electricity, versus a new unit's manufacturing carbon plus its (lower) electricity — priced in real grams of CO₂e per kWh from your grid.

Pick your device and quote, and we'll compare the carbon already locked into a new unit against the cost of fixing the one you own.

Diagnose it & get a quote

Describe the fault with your laptop — send photos or a short video and the AI technician will name the likely problem and a fair price range.

e.g. “My laptop makes a grinding noise and won't spin — here's a photo of the drum.”

Local shops that fix things

Pulled live from OpenStreetMap — electronics benches, appliance technicians and general repair shops within about a 40 minute drive — filter down to local-only if you'd rather stay close.

Enter your full address (or a town) above and we'll pull live repair businesses from OpenStreetMap — everything within roughly a 40 minute drive.

Methodology

Where the numbers come from

Live grid carbon intensity

In Great Britain we read the National Grid ESO Carbon Intensity API (half-hourly actuals). Across most of Europe we read energy-charts.info / ENTSO-E quarter-hourly CO₂-equivalent data. Elsewhere we fall back to a published national average from Ember/IEA, and label it as such.

Real repair businesses

The directory queries the OpenStreetMap Overpass API for electronics, appliance and general repair businesses around your geocoded location, with their mapped phone numbers, websites and opening hours. Nominatim does the geocoding.

Embodied carbon and energy use

Manufacturing footprints and annual kWh come from published lifecycle assessments and manufacturer product carbon reports, per category. A repair carries its own footprint — parts, courier trips, bench time — charged to the repair side.

Same-horizon comparison

Both paths are evaluated over the years the repair realistically buys you, with the new unit's manufacturing carbon amortised across its full design life. That's why an old, power-hungry fridge on a dirty grid can legitimately come out as 'replace'.
